Christopher Alfreds Grove, Styria

ECM build some of the most carefully made espresso machines you can put on a worktop. The stock knobs work perfectly well; they are simply the one part that does not match the rest of the machine. This set replaces all three touch points on a Mechanika with solid hardwood.

The set has three pieces: the steam valve knob, the hot water valve knob and the brew lever knob.

The Classika and Classika PID have one valve rather than two, so their set is a pair and is listed separately.

The wood is Styrian hardwood from a local sawmill, and I hand-pick every board. Each piece is shaped on its own and sanded through the grits by hand until the surface is silk-smooth, then finished with a food-safe oil made in Austria.

Because these are cut in small batches from natural wood, the grain on your set will not match the photographs exactly. The shape and the finish are consistent; the figure is not.

Care

Wipe with a clean microfibre cloth and warm water: damp, never soaking wet. Regular wipes are all it needs.
Keep the knobs out of the dishwasher and away from descaling solution. Both strip the oil and raise the grain.
Re-oiling is rarely needed: every couple of years at most, when the wood starts to look dry.

Shipping & returns

Everything ships tracked from Styria. Free within Austria and free across the EU from €150; below that the cost is shown in the cart before you pay.

Stocked pieces leave the workshop within two business days. If the finish you want is sold out, it is cut in the next batch and shipped within 14 days. The product page tells you which applies before you order.

You have 14 days to withdraw without giving a reason. Choosing a wood from the listed finishes is a standard option, not a personalisation, so the full right of withdrawal applies to everything in this shop.

Common questions
How do I know it fits my machine?
The models it fits are listed at the top of this page. If yours is not named, or you are unsure which version you own, send me a photo of the part you want to replace and I will tell you honestly whether it fits, including when it does not.
Will it match a piece I already own?
It is the same species, the same oil and the same hands, but it will not be identical. Wood cut from a different board months apart carries its own grain and settles a shade differently. Pieces bought together are closest; pieces bought a year apart will look like they belong to each other rather than like they came out of one mould.
Does wood cope with the heat?
Yes, and that is the reason wood is worth fitting. Hardwood conducts heat far more slowly than the metal or plastic it replaces, so the part stays comfortable to hold while the machine is up to temperature. The oil finish is food-safe and heat-stable at the temperatures these parts ever reach.
When will it arrive?
Stocked finishes leave the workshop within two business days. If the finish you want is sold out, it is cut in the next batch and shipped within 14 days. The page tells you which applies before you order, never after.
What if I change my mind?
You have 14 days to send it back without giving a reason. Choosing a wood from the listed finishes is a standard option rather than a personalisation, so the full right of withdrawal applies to everything in this shop.
