Looking after it

Care

Oiled hardwood is not delicate, but it is not plastic either. It wants wiping rather than washing, and a drop of oil twice a year. Do that and these pieces outlast the machine they are fitted to.

Four Rules

  1. Wipe with a dry or barely damp cloth. Most weeks, that is the whole routine.
  2. Never put them in the dishwasher. Heat and detergent strip the oil and raise the grain.
  3. Keep descaling solution off the wood. The note below explains why.
  4. Re-oil when the surface starts to look dry, roughly twice a year.

Oiled or Waxed

Oiled knobs, lids, handles and boards

Finished with a food-safe oil made in Austria. Re-oil about every six months, or whenever the wood looks dry and pale rather than warm.

Any food-safe mineral or hard-wax oil will do. Put a drop on a cloth, wipe it along the grain and let it sink in for ten minutes. You do not need the oil I use, and you do not need much of it.

Waxed coasters

The coasters are waxed rather than oiled, which gives a flatter, more matte surface that suits a table better than a sheen.

They need a wood wax, not an oil. Wipe with a damp cloth, let them air dry, and refresh the wax when the surface starts to look thirsty.
